It is also important to emphasize that we are only accepting content on topics surrounding dogs and cats. While we love all animals, these are the animals that we are most focused on. We will not push through pieces that focus on other pets. 

We also want to note that, when it comes to tackling these content forms, we would like you to stick with the form of content that you feel most comfortable writing. When you are writing about topics that you love and doing it in a style that comes naturally to you, writing is not a chore (and it is better for our audience to read as well)!

So, what does successful content look like in each of these categories? 

While the basic article guidelines above will help you figure out how to properly format your piece, we still need to cover some of the categories that you can write for here on Furzly! To make it easier for you, we have provided a few broad category examples that you can run with. These categories include: 

  • Dog/Cat Health– From articles discussing illnesses that may affect your pet to articles covering some of the ways you can keep your pet healthy as they age, we are looking for informative pieces that talk about all aspects of dog and cat health. If you are interested in this category, feel free to wow us with great content about pet health!
  • Dog/Cat Behavior & Development– Why do cats stare at nothing? Why do dogs keep chewing at their paws? No matter what the question may be, we always love a good piece that looks deeper into why pets do what they do and what you can expect from them as they grow up! 
  • Dog/Cat Products– Have you used a great cat brush lately? Is there a certain toy that your dog is crazy for? If so, feel free to tell us more about it by writing an article about it and letting our audience know why it is a great product for them as well! 
  • Personal Stories (With Pictures!)– Here at Furzly, we love all personal stories about pets. If you have something fun or exceptional to write about, go ahead and write your story for the world to see. There’s only one requirement. Please attach a picture of your pet in your article! We love seeing your adorable animals! 

Evergreen Content

Aptly named, evergreen content is content that remains unwaveringly true from the time of writing onwards. Once it’s written, we can post it on the site and leave it there for readers to reference when they have a question about that topic. 

For example, let’s imagine that you are writing about puppy colds. Unless new illnesses come into the public eye or dogs find new ways to contract illnesses, the information contained within the guides that we produce is going to remain the same. This means that evergreen content has to be some of the best content on our website as readers will be using this information for their own benefit. 

Evergreen content must be: 

  • Informative– When you are writing an evergreen article or guide for Furzly, your goal is to produce the most useful guide on the internet. Everything that can be found on the subject should be included in your guide. This is what makes Furzly the best place to go for information! 
  • Research-Backed– All content and claims must be backed by authoritative sources. If you include any data, facts, or statements in your article, please link to the source where you read this information (and please make sure that you are linking to a source like the American Kennel Club). If a website looks terrible or the content is chock-full of grammatical errors, please don’t reference it. Also, you may only use one external link per post. 
  • Authoritative– You are writing the best guide on the internet, which means that you need to write with a strong voice that convinces readers that you know what you are talking about. Since your article will be research-backed and thoroughly researched, you should have no problem doing this!
  • Engaging (Especially Your Title!)– We need content that convinces people to read it. Boring copy and titles will lead our audience to seek advice from other sources, which makes fulfilling our mission harder. Make sure that your copy is fun to read and that your title is something that pulls your audience in. 
  • Useful and Actionable– If it helps, try to think of your articles as fun instruction manuals. While you want your audience to love reading it, you also want them to walk away with more knowledge and an idea of what to do based on the topic that they are searching for. When you provide others with value, they will trust you and make you their source of information. 
  • Optimized for Search Engines– Meeting SEO requirements not only help us rank higher on Google but it helps your content rank higher on Google as well. There is an SEO tool built into the WordPress site, which you can learn how to use on our walkthrough here. If the SEO tools are telling you to do things that are taking away from the quality of the content, however, please reach out to us and we will make any necessary changes to ensure a healthy balance of SEO and quality. 
  • Properly Formatted (Images, Subheadings, Etc.)– Take a look at other pet websites and we can guarantee that you will run across a few examples of terrible-looking content. These generally feature walls of never-ending text, lack images, and have no subheadings to help you through each section included in the piece you are reading. Please make sure you format your content correctly by breaking your content up into subheadings, featuring images (where appropriate), and keeping your paragraphs relatively short. The reading experience should be a well-mapped journey for your audience!
  • 1500+ Words– As a general rule, we want all of our content to be over 1500 words and, ideally, over 2000 words. Longer content receives more exposure and shows us that you have put in the work to create an informative piece. That said, please do not create articles that have “fluff” (unnecessary information to increase your word count), or articles that are too long (we don’t need pieces that are 3,000 or 4,000 words). As long as you put the effort in, this should be easy to achieve!

Exciting or Insightful Pet News

Have you ever seen a story on a dog or a cat that makes you produce an audible “awww” or feel intrigued to the point of clicking on the article to learn more? If so, then you know that we are looking for news that warms the heart or gives people interesting new information regarding the pet community. 

News Pieces Must Be: 

  • Click-Worthy– Why should someone take a look at your piece? Is it cute enough or emotional enough to pull them in? Is it so intriguing that they have to take a look? Does your title want to make them read more? If your content isn’t compelling, it is not worthy of a news piece. Strive to find the best stories!
  • Snappy and to-the-point (500-800 Words)– No one wants to read a long-form news piece unless it’s in a scientific magazine and it serves a purpose for its readers. We want you to find the juiciest parts of a story and succinctly summarize it for your readers. Have fun with it!
  • Unbiased– News needs to be trustworthy and reliable. You should never be trying to convince someone of something, you are just stating the facts! Even if the news has negative elements, we want you to report it as well as you can without letting your emotions take control of the piece. Our readers will come to their own conclusion about the story!

Long-Form Viral Content

While we don’t like to point you directly to similar examples *cough-cough… Buzzfeed*, we are looking for content that is fun, fluffy, and engaging. These pieces attract the eyes of everyone on social media and encourage them to click on our content to see, for example, the “Top 10 Hilarious Pets That You Need to Follow on Social Media Right Now!”. They give people something to look at when they are having a bad day or feel like they need something new in their lives. 

Viral Content Must Be: 

  • Share-Worthy– You already know that viral content has to be fun and engaging, but it also has to be share-worthy. People will want to show their friends your content and spread it on their social media platforms. It’s fun, it’s new, and it makes for a lot of likes and shares. 
  • 1,000 to 1,500+ Words– The viral content that attracts attention tends to be listicles, which are usually long-form pieces that tackle a certain number of things related to a single topic, like the example provided above. As such, we need this content to be around 1,000 to 1,500+ words. However, it’s important that no words are wasted and that the content is engaging all the way through!
  • Filled With Engaging Images– Have you ever seen a long-form listicle without fun images? Yeah, neither have we! Make sure to include plenty of fun images throughout your piece to give users a break between your sections (but make sure that you are using non-copyrighted images from sources like Unsplash). 
  • Showcasing New Ideas– While we are bound to produce viral pieces that have similar elements to other pieces on the web, we really want you to figure out how you can put out a new article that hasn’t been done before. Remember, you want to attract new readers!

Activity Policy:
Users that have not posted in a 30 day time period will result in the accounts being deleted to free up space for new writers. We love reading the stories from the talented writers that have contributed and hope that everyone creates their first post. A user that does not create a story within their first 30 days will have the account deleted. After the first story, the user only needs to produce one story every six months to keep their account active. We will never delete stories. If you have your account suspended, it may be reinstated by emailing our support.
